Yeasty.

I am not going to lie, this weather has been getting to me.  The last month I have been up to my eyeballs in laundry that I don't ever feel like doing and toddler toys that are scattered everywhere and my greatest demise, Netflix on demand and the fact that there are so many seasons of Desperate Housewives at my fingertips.  I haven't written, I haven't pitched, I haven't blogged.  But!  All of the sudden the sun began to shine and Terry Hatcher revealed herself as the annoying time waster that she is - so onto my next project.  I decided to learn how to make bread.  The gross jar in the middle is my sourdough starter.  Cultivating yeast is actually really satisfying, especially in the time of the year where nothing is really growing yet.  If you would like to make a sourdough starter here you go - directions that I found in the book The Urban Homestead, which also has all sorts of tidbits for satisfying projects.

Sourdough Starter:
All you need is a glass container, some flour and some warm water.  You start with a cup of flour and a cup of warm water.  All you do is mix until smooth and place it in a spot where it will keep warm-ish.  Then each day you pour out one cup of the mix and replace it with a 1/2 cup flour and a 1/2 cup warm water, mix until smooth.  The first day, nothing really happens, but from the second day on this bubbly goo smells like Miller Valley on a warm summer day.  Keep doing it until you have reached day 14 and apparently, you can use it to make bread.  I'll let you know how it goes.
