Hover Craft is coming.

A buy local marketplace event that is one day only.  There will be food, booze, exclusively local vendors that you have not seen yet this holiday season and probably the best make and take table we could ever dream up.  Yes dudes, you can come too.  On Saturday.  Click here for more info.

andy and i got married

In a pretty magical whirlwind, Andrew Joseph Menchal and I were married at my parent's house on August 6, 2011 in Portage, Wisconsin.  There were 180 people, 5 kegs of beer, 2 cases of champagne, 6 cases of liquor, 12 bottles of homemade syrup, seven cakes made by a lady in town (6 vegan cupcakes), a few flower bouquets from the local farmers market, a 120 year old barn and a pig.  There was a love chant that would not yield, my mom who pretty much made everything look like it fell out of a hollywood movie (take that martha), my dad who started a leg wrestling competition at midnight (thanks dad!) and I am pretty sure most guests were hoarse the next morning because we all laughed too long and too hard that night.  Everyone danced til my mom threw the breaker in the barn at about 2:30-- but since then the rumors of what happened in the field after the dance floor closed are slowly surfacing.  It was extremely fun.  Thank you everyone.

Backyard

[Summer 2011, present day]

As a homeowner, I don't think this kind of stuff ever gets old.  When Andy and I bought this house in 2009, we had a fresh little baby and an eyesore of a backyard with no privacy.  Of course I didn't have the energy to do anything that year but stare at it.  The year following I would get up at 5am, before the baby would wake and go out to dig a ditch.  I would already have a full day of work in by the time my neighbors would venture out of their houses to chit-chat with their dirty, dirty neighbor and politely ask if I was digging a hole for a pool.  I wasn't, but I get where they were coming from.  The hole was much too deep for a patio because I uncovered a pile of buried bricks in the yard that had to be removed to level the area.  I ended up digging a massive hole.  Then my mom would come and watch the baby while I moved sand and leveled, put down traffic bond and packed it down, and then move bricks.  Lots and lots of bricks from The Brickyard to my dad's truck to my yard and then place them.  And I lost every once of baby weight I still had.  The fence builder came and drove over my patio with his two ton truck, wrecking it, and then I tore out and re-placed every brick.  Then I built a retaining wall to house the dirt I removed from the hole - to make a garden.  This year, I tackled the grass.  Our back driveway is gravel, so to keep it from migrating I put in a little barrier, pushed back the gravel with a rake, laid down some topsoil and sowed some seed.  I built a rather large raised bed for my veggie patch.   I threw in a few plants, bought an umbrella and boom: Backyard.

Of course it isn't done.  I have big plans for next year.  But it is on its way.

Pabst Fest Craft Fair: Done!

I am pleased to say that the Pabst Fest Craft Fair went off without a hitch.  There were no snags, just totally pro crafters and a ton ton ton of people perusing.  I hope everyone left with a smile on their face, a tan on their back and a fist full of hard earned monies.  I can't wait for next year!

Home Again.

I became a homeowner the same week I became a mother.  The biggest change, of course was the addition of my son, Abraham, to our little family.  The more subtle change that has occurred over time and compounded over and over is my insatiable love of nesting.  Where I live has changed from the place I crash between work and play and become a little haven where every detail big and small is a work in progress.  But every finished project is more satisfying than the last.  An old friend of mine, Ghazal Sheei, recently started blogging about homes through Home Again and here is the post she lovingly put together about ours.

I am pleased to announce a little project I have been working on with the lovely people over at Burnheart's Bar in Bay View:  The first ever Pabst Fest Craft Fair.  Most of you know that the Pabst Fest is an all day street party right outside Burnhearts where the beers and music flow freely all day.  It's usually quite an event that draws music lovers from across the city.  This year there will also be a small craft fair in the vacant lot across from the bar.  I am really excited about our vendors!  Check them out.

Monica Canilao: Sky High Gallery

I am pleased to say I had the chance to drop by Sky High Gallery today to interview Monica Canilao, her collaborator & assistant Harrison and the most lovely Faythe Levine about "What is Lost is Safe" opening this Friday.  The article will follow, click here and here for more images.  The installations are still very much in progress, but I have a feeling it will be mind blowing.

Venus Zine: Oh look...

So I was very disappointed a few months ago when I found an email in my box that said Venus Zine was pulling the plug.  I would have made a little post then, but I was in the midst of a no-more-computer month (After HoverCraft, I needed a break!)  Anyway - I just googled them to see what really was up and I found my last So You Wanna article I wrote still on the front page of their website.  I submitted months ago and immediately found out that they were pulling the plug.  I guess it's nice that the article kind of saw the light of day.  Read it here.

The joys of home ownership

Furniture cleared, doors & hardware removed, carpet ripped out, staples removed, paint sanded, plaster floated, repainted trim, walls and ceiling and the carpet guy just rang the doorbell:  Home stretch.
